AltSchool Africa Extends Footprint Into Kenya, Fortifying Its Position in East Africa as Part of Its Expansion Efforts

Nigerian edtech startup has expanded its operations into Kenya, marking its second venture into the East African market. The startup, with a network of 60,000 learners across over 100 countries, specializes in offering specialized courses designed to facilitate the transition into global technology roles.

According to Adewale Yusuf, the co-founder and CEO, the decision to establish a presence in Kenya was driven by lower learner enrollment numbers compared to Nigeria.

Initially launched in 2021, AltSchool Africa began with one-year diploma courses in software engineering but has significantly expanded its educational offerings since then. The startup now operates five distinct schools: Engineering, Data, Business, Product, and the Creative Economy, offering a diverse range of courses such as sales, digital marketing, fintech product management, and data engineering.

The launch in Kenya follows months of dedicated work, with Tabitha Kayvu appointed to lead operations in the country. AltSchool Africa, known for providing virtual education, has also formed strategic partnerships to create a thriving community of learners in Nigeria.

With $1 million secured in a pre-seed funding round in 2022, featuring participation from Nigerian entertainers Falz and Ajebutter, the startup has expanded its marketing efforts.

Nifemi Akinwamide, Head of Growth and Partnerships at AltSchool, confirms ongoing discussions with communities and organizations in Kenya. The move aligns with AltSchool’s mission to empower Africans with the necessary tech skills and its plans to expand into other African nations with promising prospects.

AltSchool Africa focuses on preparing learners for opportunities in the technology sector, emphasizing skills acquisition that goes beyond mere job placements. Despite industry challenges, the startup is dedicated to ensuring its students grasp what employers seek, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing successful tech careers.
