Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers to Partner with Universities in Bid to Boost Capital Market Talent

2 min read

The Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) has announced a strategic partnership with universities across Nigeria to integrate the study of securities and investment into bachelor’s and postgraduate curriculums. The initiative is part of a broader effort to equip the next generation of professionals with the skills and expertise required to advance Nigeria’s capital market.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the institute outlined its vision for nurturing talent and raising awareness about career opportunities in the securities and investment profession.

Speaking at the CIS “Review of the Economy and Outlook for 2025” event, themed “Shaping Nigeria’s Economic Future: Key Trends, Impacts and Strategic Solutions for 2025,” the 13th President of the Institute, Oluropo Dada, underscored the critical role of young professionals in the sector’s growth.

“We shall aggressively direct our advocacy into key developmental areas,” Dada said. “This includes pushing for the passage of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments of Nigeria Bill, improving the operational environment for stockbrokers, and collaborating with bodies such as the Association of Securities Dealing Houses of Nigeria. We will also work with NGX on reviewing capital float requirements for listed companies and contribute to the drafting of the Nigerian Gold Reserve (Establishment) Bill.”

Dada highlighted the importance of positioning CIS as a leading professional body and strengthening its role in fostering innovation and professionalism within the capital market.

The event also featured remarks from Eric Ogunleye, Director of the African Development Institute at the African Development Bank Group, who discussed the potential of market pricing in the petroleum sector to spur opportunities in renewable energy. Ogunleye stressed that fiscal and tax reforms, coupled with enhanced social protections and an improved investment environment, are pivotal to Nigeria’s economic future despite ongoing challenges such as inflation and a high cost of living.

In a related development, 80 stockbrokers were conferred with the status of Fellows of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers. Among the honourees were Dr. Emomotimi Agama, Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and former legislator Felix Bajomo.

With this university partnership initiative and its focus on professional development, CIS aims to not only bolster the pool of qualified talent in the sector but also lay the foundation for a more resilient and dynamic capital market.
