APM Terminals Apapa Lauded as Nigeria’s Safety Standard-Bearer in Ports Sector

In a resounding endorsement of workplace safety, the Nigerian Ports Authority’s (NPA) General Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment, Abdul Sani, has praised APM Terminals Apapafor its exemplary safety standards. This commendation was delivered at the 2024 Global Safety Day event held last week at the terminal operator’s premises in Apapa, Lagos.

Themed “Learning is easy if we are curious,” the event highlighted APM Terminals’ ongoing commitment to cultivating a safe work environment. Bringing together employees, management, and stakeholders, the event underscored the importance of curiosity and proactive engagement in sustaining safety protocols.

Describing APM Terminals Apapa as a national model, Sani remarked, “APM Terminals’ commitment to safety is clear in today’s celebration. The terminal is a model for others across the country.” His sentiments were echoed by Adebowale Ibrahim, Port Manager at Lagos Port Complex Apapa, who lauded the terminal as one of Nigeria’s safest and best-organised facilities. “APMT is setting the standard. Keep up the great work—together, we can make Nigeria’s workplaces safer,” Ibrahim said.

Keith Svendsen, Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals, highlighted that safety at APMT is more than a policy—it is a core value. “Safety is integral to our operations, ensuring employees feel valued and protected,” Svendsen noted, stressing the importance of a daily commitment to a safe workplace. APMT’s Terminal Manager, Steen Knudsen, added, “Engagement with people helps us learn what we need to know. This knowledge empowers us to solve problems, hone skills, and reduce workplace risks.”

In a spirited nod to the next generation’s role in fostering safety, the event included a children’s safety slogan competition, aiming to nurture awareness from a young age. Winners were awarded by Knudsen, who encouraged employees to approach safety with childlike curiosity. APMT’s Training Manager, Chima Anyanwu, added, “Curiosity drives technological advancement and innovation, ultimately enhancing safety.”

Felix Ugwuagbo, APM Terminals Apapa’s Health, Safety, and Environment Manager, emphasised that safety is everyone’s responsibility, urging frontline workers to approach each task with curiosity and a proactive mindset. “Ask questions; don’t hesitate to raise concerns or seek clarity on safety measures,” he advised. “Each person can make a difference. Start with curiosity; explore if there’s a safer way.”

The event concluded with an awards ceremony honouringemployees who exemplify the company’s commitment to safety. This recognition reinforced APM Terminals’ dedication to fostering a proactive safety culture and celebrating those who make workplace safety their priority.
