Dangote Group Bets Big on Nigeria’s Clean Energy Future with $280m Investment in CNG
Dangote Group has announced a $280 million investment in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology and infrastructure, marking a bold endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s push towards sustainable energy. In a statement on Sunday, the company confirmed that the funds are set to accelerate the transition of its fleet to CNG, underscoring its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and supporting a low-carbon economy.
President Tinubu, who has championed gas as Nigeria’s transition fuel, is pushing to create an environment conducive to private sector engagement in energy transformation. His administration has initiated the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles, aiming to bolster Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure and drive both energy efficiency and economic growth. In alignment, Dangote Cement is now powering its fleet with CNG, with Group Managing Director Arvind Pathak outlining ambitious plans to transition its trucks fully by mid-2026.
“This marks a significant milestone in Dangote’s clean energy transition. We aim to operate most of our fleet on CNG by mid-2026. Already, we’ve received an initial batch of 1,500 mono-fuel CNG trucks, with an additional 1,600 expected by year’s end,” Pathak stated. “This investment will also expand our CNG fuelling infrastructure to ensure reliable access for our fleet,” he added, stressing the company’s intention to meet its 2025 deployment timeline.
Pathak noted that Dangote’s CNG stations—beginning with the facility at Obajana, capable of refuelling over 3,000 trucks—are essential pillars in Nigeria’s shift to cleaner fuels. A second station is under development in Ibese, further anchoring the company’s infrastructure strategy.
Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of the Dangote Group, affirmed that the company’s CNG investments align with Nigeria’s Paris Agreement commitments, targeting net-zero emissions by 2060. “With President Tinubu leading the way on energy efficiency, private sector intervention is essential to achieving a sustainable energy future,” Dangote added. He emphasized that Dangote’s early CNG adoption has made it the largest operator of CNG trucks in Nigeria, contributing to the nation’s energy independence and aligning with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Our commitment to CNG vehicles is part of a larger vision for a cleaner and greener future,” Dangote stated, underscoring the Dangote Group’s role in driving Nigeria’s energy transformation forward.
