D’Tigress Secure Historic Quarterfinal Spot at Olympics with Win Over Canada

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, made history by qualifying for their first-ever quarterfinal appearance at the Olympic Games, following a triumphant win over Canada on Sunday. The team delivered an exhilarating performance, coming from behind to secure a 79-70 victory in a tightly contested match.

The game began evenly, with the first quarter ending in an 18-18 tie, showcasing the competitive nature of both teams. However, Nigeria struggled in the second and fourth quarters, which ended 23-19 and 24-19 in favor of Canada, respectively. It was the third quarter that made all the difference, as D’Tigress surged with an impressive 23-5 run.

At halftime, Canada held a narrow 41-37 lead. Ezinne Kalu led Nigeria’s scoring efforts with 21 points, while Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah dominated the boards with 7 rebounds. Promise Amukamara contributed significantly with 6 assists, the highest for the team.

D’Tigress came out blazing in the third quarter, launching an 11-0 run that put them ahead by 9 points. They maintained their momentum into the final quarter, delivering a superior performance that secured a historic 9-point victory.

The win marked D’Tigress’ second victory out of three group games, with one loss. Throughout the group stage, they scored a total of 208 points while conceding 207. This landmark achievement propels Nigeria into the quarterfinals, setting a new milestone for the team at the Olympic Games.
