MOREMI HIGH SCHOOL OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY ’91 SET CELEBRATES 40 YEARS HOME COMING

The 1991 set of Moremi High School, O.A.U Ile-Ife, came together in a heartwarming show of unity and gratitude as they celebrated their 40th anniversary of their admission into the school, being the first set of JSS 1 in the new 6334 educational system in Nigeria in 1985. The reunion, which took place on the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, was more than just a gathering of old classmates; it was a celebration of friendship, shared memories, and giving back to their alma mater. From across Nigeria and around the world, members of the 1991 class returned to Ile-Ife for the milestone event with the theme “BACK TO SCHOOL”, all tagged in their school uniforms, school bags, white socks, and school sandals.

Beaming with pride, the President of the ’91 set, Dr. Ogochukwu Temitope Kehinde, expressed her profound gratitude to God for making the celebration a reality. “I thank God for granting everyone safe travels and for keeping us alive to see this day. To those who joined us in person and those who connected online from around the world, I extend my gratitude. May we continue to celebrate together for many more years,” she said.

The weekend was filled with meaningful activities designed to leave a lasting impact, part of the activities include; giving Forty indigent and intelligent students of Moremi High School scholarships for a while session 2025/26 academic year, giving over 700 students of the school note books and other stationarys, they had a lunch date within the school premises with over 50 teaching and non teaching staff, while grants were given to some association members in urgent need. Additionally, a loan scheme was introduced to support entrepreneurs within the group, enabling them to expand their businesses. The class also took time to honor some of their former teachers who joined the occasion, acknowledging their role in shaping the lives of students decades ago with cash gifts.

For many students, the scholarship awards came as life-changing support. One of the recipients could hardly contain her joy. “This scholarship means so much to me and my family. It will help me focus more on my studies without worrying about school fees. I am so grateful to the 1991 set for remembering us,” she said with a smile. Some of the teachers praised the set members for consistently organizing numerous activities in the school.

Teachers who graced the celebration also expressed their admiration for the set’s dedication. Retired teacher, Mrs. Adegoke, described the gathering as a shining example of alumni commitment. “What you have done is remarkable. It is not every day you see old students return to give back in such a generous and structured way. Moremi High School is proud of you,” she said.

Prince. Adeniyi Gboye, the Chairman of the planning committee, echoed the sentiment of giving back with satisfaction. “We wanted to celebrate in a way that makes a real difference. It’s not just about coming together, but also about touching lives and supporting one another,” he said.

For the past fifteen years, the 1991 set has been meeting annually, bonding over shared experiences and working collectively to contribute to the school’s growth. This 40th anniversary stood out as a true testament to their solidarity, proof that the ties formed within the walls of Moremi High School continue to flourish, four decades on.
