Nigeria Unveils N500m Pilot Scheme to Boost Leather Industry and Empower Women Entrepreneurs

The Nigerian government has approved a N500m pilot initiative aimed at revitalising the country’s hides and skin industry, with a particular focus on empowering women entrepreneurs in leather and footwear manufacturing.
The initiative, endorsed by the Federal Executive Council, will be overseen by the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology. The government hopes the scheme will provide vital support for small-scale manufacturers, drive economic growth, and further integrate Nigeria into the global leather trade.
Iman Suleiman-Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs, welcomed the approval, highlighting the pivotal role of women in the industry. She called for at least 50 per cent of the intervention funds to be allocated to female entrepreneurs, arguing that gender inclusivity would maximise the initiative’s economic impact.
“As we’re all aware, just like gold, hides and skin are an untapped resource with vast economic potential,” Suleiman-Ibrahim told journalists in Abuja on Monday. “The Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology deserves commendation for spearheading this initiative. Our ask is for women to receive a significant share, and we will work collaboratively to ensure proper implementation and accountability.”
The pilot scheme, which will be launched in Ogun State, is expected to provide starter packs to manufacturers, enabling them to scale production and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global leather market. Suleiman-Ibrahim noted that major luxury fashion brands, including Louis Vuitton, source a significant portion of their leather from Nigeria, underscoring the industry’s global relevance.
She urged Nigerians to seize the opportunity, invest in local leather production, and help transform the sector into a major revenue-generating and job-creating industry.
“With the right investment and policy direction, Nigeria can become a leading player in the global leather trade,” she said. “This initiative is a step towards realising that potential.”
