Nigeria Rolls Out Locally Assembled CNG Buses for Airport Shuttles
The Federal Government has taken delivery of the first fleet of locally assembled Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, signaling a significant step toward greener transportation and enhanced airport shuttle services across Nigeria.
Unveiled on Tuesday at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed Airport, the buses were produced by Lanre Shittu Motors and received by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), led by its Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku.
Driving Sustainability and Economic Relief
Presiding over the event, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management Festus Keyamo highlighted the initiative as part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader vision to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy sources.
“This fleet of CNG buses will commence passenger movement across our airports immediately,” Keyamo announced. “It reflects Nigeria’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and meeting global climate targets.”
The buses, he noted, are designed with environmental sustainability in mind, boasting zero emissions. They are also equipped with accessibility features to cater to passengers with disabilities, ensuring inclusive transportation for all.
Alleviating Post-Subsidy Challenges
Keyamo emphasized that the shift to CNG-powered vehicles is not merely an environmental measure but also a strategic response to mitigate the economic impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians.
“This initiative aligns with the President’s directive to reduce dependence on traditional fossil fuels like petrol and diesel,” Keyamo said. “By promoting the adoption of CNG, we are offering a sustainable alternative that will also ease transportation costs.”
Advanced Features for Passenger Comfort
Taiwo Shittu, Managing Director of Lanre Shittu Motors, detailed the two bus variants designed for specific transport needs: a 31-seater model tailored for airport shuttles and a 54-seater version aimed at urban mass transit.
“Both models are equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning, viewing screens, and charging ports, ensuring a comfortable and convenient travel experience for passengers,” Shittu said.
A Blueprint for Green Mobility
This rollout marks a significant step in Nigeria’s transition to environmentally friendly and cost-effective public transport solutions. By embracing CNG technology, the Federal Government aims to chart a course for greener mobility while addressing pressing economic and environmental challenges.
As these buses begin operations, they set a precedent for future projects aimed at enhancing public transportation and reducing Nigeria’s carbon emissions.
