Transcorp Power to Boost Nigeria’s Energy Output Amid Ongoing Gas Supply Struggles
The Group Chief Executive Officer of Transcorp Group, Mrs. Owen Omogiafo, has revealed that the company is working to add an additional 150 megawatts of electricity to Nigeria’s power grid despite ongoing gas shortages that threaten operations at its key thermal facilities. Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Saudi Arabia, Omogiafodescribed Transcorp’s efforts to address the nation’s energy deficit and the company’s plans to scale up renewable energy production through new partnerships.
“Transcorp is committed to bridging Nigeria’s energy gap,” Omogiafo told Arise News. “We are focusing on expanding energy availability through investment and partnerships, particularly in renewables. Just last week, we signed an MoUwith Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency to bring 150 megawatts of additional capacity into the sector.”
Despite this commitment, Omogiafo acknowledged that Transcorp’s power ambitions are undercut by an acute gas supply crisis affecting plants such as the Afam facility in Rivers State. Originally capable of generating 301 megawatts, the plant now produces just 100 megawatts due to fuel shortages. “Nigeria’s installed capacity stands at about 13,000 megawatts, yet only around 5,000 megawatts are delivered,” she said. “With an integrated gas-to-power strategy, we could bridge this gap, unlocking Nigeria’s—and Africa’s—full potential.”
Omogiafo’s comments come as Nigeria grapples with an entrenched energy shortfall, attributed by industry experts to a fractured supply chain and insufficient infrastructure. By advancing renewables and seeking sustainable gas solutions, Transcorp hopes to play a transformative role in powering Nigeria’s future.
