Nigeria Launches Unified Government Service Portal to Improve Access to Public Services
The Nigerian Federal Government, in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), has unveiled a new Government Service Portal (GSP) aimed at revolutionising public service access across the nation. Developed by the country’s digital infrastructure provider, Galaxy Backbone, the portal promises to enhance interactions between government agencies and citizens, making essential services more accessible without the need for physical visits.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Chidi Okpala, Head of Media and Corporate Communications at Galaxy Backbone, the GSP is described as a unified digital platform designed to facilitate smooth communication between citizens and a variety of government agencies. By consolidating services such as National Identification Number registration, immigration support, and healthcare access, the portal seeks to reduce bureaucratic delays and increase efficiency in the public sector.
The launch event, which featured representatives from 12 key government agencies, marks the first phase of the GSP’s rollout. This collaborative effort, showcased during a high-level workshop, aims to align the agencies involved with the project’s goals and encourage a seamless transition to the new system.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, who represented Minister Bosun Tijani, underscored the initiative’s potential to transform public service delivery in Nigeria. “The Government Service Portal has the potential to change lives, and I believe that through efficient and effective collaboration we will achieve a lot for our nation,” he stated.
Professor Ibrahim Adeyanyu, Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone, highlighted the broader implications of the project for Nigeria’s digital future. “The Government Service Portal is a testament to Nigeria’s dedication to embracing digitalisation for improved governance,” Adeyanyu said. “With the engagement of these pilot agencies, we are taking a major step toward a fully digitised public service ecosystem that will benefit every Nigerian citizen.”
Sunjil Son, Country Director at KOICA, praised the partnership as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation. “KOICA is delighted to partner with Galaxy Backbone and the Government of Nigeria in delivering a platform that will change how citizens interact with their government,” Son remarked. “This initiative aligns with our broader mission of promoting sustainable development through technology and innovation.”
As the Government Service Portal progresses, the partnership aims to expand its scope, ultimately providing a comprehensive digital gateway for citizens to engage with public services nationwide.
