FIRS Partners with Abuja Chamber of Commerce to Boost Tax Compliance Among Nigerian Businesses
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving tax compliance among Nigerian businesses through a strategic partnership with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). This collaboration was emphasised during the opening ceremony of the 19th Abuja International Trade Fair, held in Abuja on Monday, under the theme ‘Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Finance, and Taxation.’
Speaking at the event, FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, represented by Dr Lovette Ononuga, Director of Tax Payers Services, praised the ACCI for its continued efforts to promote trade and collaboration among Nigerian entrepreneurs.
“This event showcases the strength and resilience of Nigerian entrepreneurs,” Adedeji noted. “Furthermore, we believe collaboration is key to advancing tax advocacy and promoting voluntary compliance. Our partnership with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry is vital in raising awareness about the benefits of tax compliance to the economy.”
Ononuga stressed that simplifying the tax process, particularly through automation, has made compliance more accessible for businesses. “Automation has made it easier for businesses to thrive and pay taxes,” she said, reiterating FIRS’s focus on a customer-centric approach that equips tax officials with the skills needed to effectively serve the public.
Chief Emeka Obegolu, President of the ACCI, welcomed participants to the trade fair, highlighting its role as a platform for connecting businesses and fostering innovation. “The AITF has firmly established itself as Nigeria’s premier multi-sectoral event, providing domestic and international exhibitors the opportunity to showcase their products and stay informed about emerging industry trends,” he said.
This year’s theme, ‘Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Finance, and Taxation,’ underscored the critical importance of efficient infrastructure and regulatory frameworks for business growth. Obegolu added that streamlined transportation options reduce logistical challenges, making supply chains more efficient and cost-effective.
Dele Oye, National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), lauded the partnership between FIRS and ACCI, calling for policies that create a favourable business environment. “Effective transportation networks, accessible trade finance solutions, and fair taxation policies are crucial as we aim to position Nigeria as a leader in regional and global trade,” he said.
Running over 12 days, the fair brings together more than 500 exhibitors displaying over 10,000 products and services, acting as both a trade hub and a forum for knowledge-sharing and networking among business leaders and policymakers.
