This was disclosed by Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani who announced these initiatives during a press conference commemorating Global Data Privacy Day, themed “Take Control of your Data.” This announcement is part of Nigeria’s week-long Data Protection Week, reflecting the country’s commitment to digital transformation.
Minister Tijani highlighted the interconnected nature of contemporary devices, leading to a substantial increase in daily data generation. He pointed out President Bola Tinubu’s directive to revolutionize public services through technology, signaling a significant shift towards digitalization.
Tijani stated, “Many services consumed by citizens in the coming months and years will also be digitalized as a lot of the things we do in public service will be digitized.”
Recognizing the potential risks associated with data collection and sharing, the minister emphasized the crucial role of the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Galaxy Backbone in overseeing the data exchange system and ensuring compliance with established guidelines.
Tijani stressed the importance of digital device manufacturers prioritizing the security of personal information they collect. Addressing a knowledge gap in data protection, he outlined the focus of Data Protection Week on enlightenment to bridge this gap and instigate behavioral change.
In a goodwill message, Stanley Adedeji, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, affirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to ensuring compliance in its data collection practices. He emphasized the significance of automation in data interaction with ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) and urged organizations to prioritize compliance to avoid legal complications.
Adedeji highlighted the early stage of development in the data protection ecosystem, urging institutions to participate actively. He emphasized the necessity for capacity building to familiarize individuals with data protection laws and cultivate an attitudinal change towards data privacy.
The National Assembly committed to supporting the NDPC through legislation and collaboration, amending laws for increased effectiveness and transparency.
